According to reports in The Guardian, Chelsea FC target and Southampton defender Luke Shaw is ready to decide his future before the World Cup in Brazil. Shaw is an outside candidate for Roy Hodgson’s England squad after having an impressive Premier League season with Southampton. These same outstanding performances have caught the eye of some of Europe’s top clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United, and reportedly Real Madrid and PSG. The interest and rumors swirling around Luke Shaw have raised his supposed transfer price to £30 million, which is a premium to pay for a relatively untested 18 year old defender.
What teams are paying for, aside from his obvious talent, is Luke Shaw’s tremendous potential. He is a regular starter for a mid-table Premier League team at just 18 years old and has already made his first England appearance. The potential for growth in to a world class defender is evident if he is presented with the right opportunity. There is also the premium that Premier League clubs must pay for English talent in order to satisfy the league’s homegrown player rules. with Chelsea’s English backbone of Frank Lampard, John Terry, and Ashley Cole all nearing the end of their careers, it is time for the club to reinvest in some fresh English talent.
Shaw is currently being pursued by Manchester United but the rumors suggest that he favors Chelsea because it was his favored club as a boy. Whether that means anything is still to be seen once the youngster decides where he will end up. There is also the question of if Luke Shaw will even leave the club. Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying “At the end of the day Luke Shaw is a player that belongs to Southampton, and it will be the club, Southampton, that makes the decision as to what happens with his future. Of course there will be interest for him, but so far right now he’s a player at Southampton and it looks as though it will continue that way”.
That may just be the chairman posturing in order to keep whatever leverage the club thinks they have in keeping Shaw on the books but he does indeed have a point. Luke Shaw is contracted to the club until 2018 and it will take a very hefty offer to pry away one of England’s most promising talents from the Saints.
