Chelsea FC midfielder Andre Schurrle still believes that Chelsea can win the double by bringing home the Champions League and Premier League titles. Chelsea are very much still in the race for the Champions League trophy but still need a lot of things to happen in their favor to with the Premier League. If Manchester City and Liverpool take maximum points from their remaining games then City will win on goal difference. Chelsea will need both sides to drop three points and to take maximum points which is not entirely out of the question no matter how unlikely it seems.
As for the Champions League, it is a much more straightforward task to make it to the final and be 90 minutes away from a second Champions League trophy in the club’s history. Beat Atletico Madrid and move on, draw by any score other than 0-0 and go home, and of course lose and go home. The double elimination makes for an even more fascinating dynamic because it is not always the best team that advances, just the best team over the course of two matches.
Andre Schurrle on Chelsea’s chance at the double:
“Of course it will be hard for us from here. We have to do everything in our power to win the two games we’ve got left and hope Liverpool and City both give us something. But we’re still in it. We know it will be tough but everybody thinks we can win it, win the League and the Champions League. We have to believe – and we do.”
Andre Schurrle on the differrent styles Chelsea is capable of playing:
“We can play both types of game. We showed against Arsenal that, when we need to, we can force the game and score goals. We know we can do that and we hope to give Atletico those sort of problems if they come and just try to defend. The group knows how important it is for us to beat them and that we had to win against Liverpool too. But to do it just as we wanted was the perfect way to give us confidence. We need to have a balance in our play, especially because we are at home. If it’s 0-0, it’s extra-time and penalties, but if it’s 1-1 or any other draw we’re out – so we need to win.”
Schurrle looks to be in line to start or at least play a significant role with Eden Hazard still an injury concern and the Blues thin at midfield due to suspensions. If or when he does play, look for Schurrle to add his pace and hustle to an already pacey Chelsea lineup. His direct approach has been crucial for Chelsea this season and he still has a large part to play in whether or not the Blues’ season ends with silverware.
