Phil Jagielka Comfortable With Gary Cahill Partnership In England Squad

Everton defender Phil Jagielka discussed his partnership in England’s backline with Chelsea FC’s Gary Cahill and says that he is happy and comfortable playing alongside the man he calls “Gaz”. Jagielka has become an automatic first choice in Roy Hodgson’s defense since John Terry retired from international football and Joleon Lescott lost his starting place in Manchester City’s lineup.

Jagielka has done very well in England’s defense and the Three Lions are undefeated in the matches that he and Cahill have started together. They will go in to the World Cup as a relatively inexperienced duo but they seem to have a good understanding which could be just as vital to England’s hopes as a wealth of international experience.

Phil Jagielka on playing with Gary Cahill:

"“We spend a lot of time together and we laugh and joke. He’s a Sheffield lad and I played for Sheffield United so there’s plenty to talk about. We do not have a tremendous amount of caps [Cahill has 22 and Jagielka 24] but they have most been with each other. It is a work in progress. I am more than happy playing alongside Gaz and obviously I know people like Joe Hart, Bainesy and Glen Johnson.I still find it difficult assuming I’m going to play for England, but I’ve played quite a lot in qualifying and have built up a good relationship with Gaz. We haven’t played together for a little while and hopefully these three games will give us the chance to get that relationship going again.”Source – The Telegraph"

Jagielka also spoke about the talk that John Terry should be in the squad, and while some papers tried to claim that he was bothered by it, it seems that he understands it and is respectful of what Terry has achieved for England. Phil and Gary will have some big shoes to fill if they hope to fulfill the expectations placed on them by the English faithful.
