The nPower Championship club Sheffield Wednesday have made a bid to sign the recently released Chelsea FC youngster Sam Hutchinson on a free transfer. The 24 year old Hutchinson just completed a loan season at the club and manager Stuart Gray was impressed enough with the player to make an offer for him after he was released by Chelsea.

Sam Hutchinson has endured a tumultuous career and was even forced to retire because of chronic knee injuries. He was able to make a comeback and is now wanted by several clubs after becoming a free agent. The defender can play either fullback position and can even central midfield in a pinch. He was a top prospect for the Blues before suffering several consecutive knee injuries.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Stuart Gray on the possible transfer for Sam Hutchinson:

"“Sam is available on a free. An offer has gone in for him. I think he’s away on holiday with his family at the moment. The club are talking with his agent. I am keen to re-sign Sam. Any of the loan players we have taken have never been in anybody’s first team, so I’ve had to bring them here and get them up to speed and match fit.“It can backfire on you sometimes. We’ve put Wickham, Fryatt and even Barkley and Hutchinson into the shop window. It opens the door for other people. Any of the lads we have brought here, we’ve looked after them. We’ve done it right. I think they appreciate what we have done for them. Maybe the player will have some loyalty to the club; I don’t know if the agents do.”Source: Sky Sports"

Hutchinson is an example of unfulfilled promise and a career that can be derailed by bad luck more than any factor. While it is no guarantee that he would have been a first teamer by now, Hutchinson’s career would certainly be on another trajectory had he remained healthy. His grit and determination to fight back from his injury is a testament to his character and we wish him the best of luck and health in the rest of his career.
