Online betting giants Sky Bet have suspended betting on Frank Lampard moving to MLS and New York City FC after a suspiciously large number of bets came in this week regarding the midfielder’s future. Lampard has been linked with a move to MLS’s new franchise New York City FC which made its first signing in Spanish striker David Villa earlier in the month.

Adding Lampard to their franchise would boost NYC FC’s already rising profile. The club is owned by the same investors from Abu Dhabi that own Manchester City. They will have the marketing presence and financial backing of Manchester City along with a pipeline of young players who may be loaned between the clubs. Frank Lampard himself has said that moving to the United States is a possibility he is considering and that he is open to the idea.

Sky Bet’s Paul Wiggins on the betting and Frank Lampard’s future:

"“After news emerged that Lampard had held informal talks with MLS franchise New York City, we were braced for an upturn in interest. We still traded overnight but by morning it was too risky, it now seems only a matter of time before he announces a decision. Attention has since turned to who Chelsea will replace the veteran with, and we go 1/3 on Cesc Fabregas moving to Stamford Bridge this summer.”Source: SkySports.com"

The MLS has proven to be an excellent place for older Premier League stars to extend their playing careers. Players like David Beckham, Robbie Keane, Thierry Henry, and more recently Jermain Defoe have found a new lease on life in some of North America’s biggest cities. A move to New York City would be ideal for Frank Lampard as it is relatively close to London and would provide him with a plethora of marketing and endorsement opportunities. Not to mention the prospect of playing in a competitive league that is growing every year as Americans’ interest in the “other” kind of football grows.
