Chelsea FC and Belgium forward Romelu Lukaku picked up an ankle injury in a World Cup warm up friendly against Tunisia. The injury occurred late in the second half and the striker was subbed off late in to stoppage time in Belgium’s final friendly before they face Algeria in the World Cup. Belgium coach Marc Wilmots tried to downplay the concerns over Lukaku’s injury and said that it was not too serious.

Luckily for Belgium the injury does not appear to be serious and as Wilmots said he will only miss three to four days. The Red Devils are very thin at forward after starter Christian Benteke suffered an Achilles tendon tear in training with his club team Aston Villa. They would likely have to play a false nine with Everton midfielder/forward Kevin Mirallas or deploy Napoli’s Dries Martins in the role instead.

Belgium coach Marc Wilmots on Romelu Lukaku’s injury and playing against Tunisia:

"“Romelu has problems walking. His injury seems at first sight not too bad, the doctors told me. This is preliminary to a severe sprain but we will obviously do additional tests on Sunday. For the time being, Romelu will miss three to four days, hopefully it stops there.” It was hard to play (against a team) that remained with nine men behind the ball. This was a very good test with an eye on the World Cup and Algeria, although that team has even more talent offensively.”Source: SoccerWay.com"

There have been a rash of pre-World Cup injuries with big stars like Marco Reus and Franck Ribery missing out on the tournament because of injuries picked up in training or in friendlies. Many fans blame FIFA for the unnecessary friendlies but they are necessary for teams to work out the kinks in games that do not mean anything. Romelu Lukaku was lucky to avoid serious injury and he will look to bounce back and put on a show in Brazil.
