Chelsea FC legend Michael Ballack recently spoke about fellow German Andre Schurrle’s first season at the club and thinks he can be a main player next year. Ballack was at the Beats By Dre “Game Before The Game” and was asked about his compatriots transition from the Bundesliga to the Premier League. He credited the young midfielder with adapting quickly in his first season but mentioned how hard it was to make the transition from Bayer Leverkusen to a big club like Chelsea.
The major point that Ballack was trying to make about Andre Schurrle, and any Chelsea player, that the expectations are usually what holds a player. Moving from Leverkusen where they can compete for the Bundesliga title but not year in and year out. At Chelsea, every match is like a cup final and the competition for places in the starting eleven keeps players on their toes.
Michael Ballack on Andre Schurrle’s first season at Chelsea:
“It was his first season playing for a big club and it was a big challenge to go to the Premier League and for that I think he did quite well. There is still a lot of space to improve – he is still young. Hopefully he can still improve next year and can be a main player for the team.
It was the first season to play next to world class players and learn from them. Bayer Leverkusen had different expectations and they didn’t play for the title.
At Chelsea you play for the title – week in and week out you have to perform on the edge. Sometimes he scored and it was still not enough to stay in the first eleven in the next game. He has to learn to give always 100 per cent in training. He had some good performances and he had a period when it looked like Jose Mourinho didn’t really want him but then he came back which was positive.”
Michael Ballack is not the first pundit to back Andre Schurrle for a bigger role in the Chelsea squad next season. He provides a more direct approach to a match than the other players at his position, Eden Hazard, Willian, and Oscar. Schurrle also has the instinct of a center forward and often makes intelligent runs in behind and is able to finish chances when they are presented. With his approach to training and the game, Andre Schurrle has the chance to be every bit the legend that Michael Ballack is.
