Chelsea FC: John Terry Praises Diego Costa

Chelsea FC captain John Terry knows a thing or two about great strikers, he’s been shutting them down at Stamford Bridge for 14 years. So when he has high praise for Chelsea’s new signing Diego Costa, it definitely means a thing or two. Terry spoke to the Chelsea FC website and complimented the Spanish/Brazilian striker for his strength which is obvious but his movement as well.

John Terry also fondly recalled when he and Diego Costa had a “square-up” and the former England captain was pleased to see that Costa did not back down from him. It is that type of confidence and intimidation that Chelsea have missed from their strikers because let’s face it, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba are not very imposing and aside from the odd swipe at Jan Vertonghen, neither is Fernando Torres.

John Terry on Diego Costa’s skills:

"“First of all, his movement and his strength are really good – I was really surprised by it. I think everyone remembers the square-up we had in the first 10 minutes of the first leg of our semi-final game against Atletico Madrid last season, where I tried it on and he stood up and called it on. I thought, ‘Fair play’. After that, I realized he was as game as I was. He holds the ball up very well, he has got great movement and he is really physical, but he is very clever with his strength and the way he uses his body. I think he could be a very good signing for us.”Source: ChelseaFC.com"

Many pundits felt that all that was missing from the Chelsea title challenge last season was an elite striker. Not even world-class, just good enough to finish the chances created for him rather than firing blanks and lacking confidence. This year, Chelsea could have two confident and very good strikers in Diego Costa and Romelu Lukaku in the squad. Will that be enough for Chelsea to end their one-year silverware drought? We sure hope so.
