Chelsea FC and Nigerian international defender Kenneth Omeruo revealed why he returned to Championship club Middlesbrough on loan rather than seek a loan to a Premier League club. The youngster told AfricanFootball.com that he made the move back to Middlesbrough because he was looking for a club where he can be guaranteed regular first team football.

While the club may not be in the top-flight, many believe that regular football is the most important aspect to a player’s development. It is certainly more important than sitting on the bench at a big club and only seeing action in training. There is also the degree of familiarity that Kenneth Omeruo has with the club that will help him make an impact sooner on the pitch. He knows the facilities, the management, the city, and the demands of the Championship so there will be no adjustment period that may hinder his development.

"“You know, it’s difficult to see a 20-year-old defender play week in, week out. And if I go to join a premiership side I would not be guaranteed regular play. So, if I would be on the bench in another club, I would rather remain at Chelsea. So, that’s why I decided to go where I am familiar with and guaranteed regular play. I spoke with Mike Emenalo [Chelsea sporting chief] and he said with the plans Chelsea have for me that it was best I continue with ‘Boro. And I personally think it was best for me because I am already established as a player in ‘Boro, the fans like me.” – Kenneth OmeruoSource: AfricanFootball.com"

Chelsea have had a good recent track record sending their youngsters on loan including Nathaniel Chalobah and Josh McEachran but Omeruo has been the most successful. He has fit in perfectly at the club and the fans of the club have accepted the Nigerian as one of their own. It is obvious that Kenneth Omeruo has a very bright future ahead of him and another fine season at Middlesbrough will only serve to put more people on notice about his prodigious talents.
