Though it has been public for quite some time now, Chelsea FC have finally officially announced the loan of defender Kenneth Omeruo on a season-long loan to Championship club Middlesbrough. Omeruo spent the tail end of last season with the club and made a great impression in only 14 appearances. He was praised by manager Aitor Taranka who publicly pined for the return of the young Nigerian to the club this season.

Omeruo helped raise his stock with a fine World Cup for Nigeria and helped lead the Super Eagles to the round of 16 where they fell to the French. He was at the heart of a defense that had two clean sheets in four games and shut down the dangerous Bosnia and Herzegovina attack. Many fans were surprised to hear that he was attached to Chelsea as they had never seen him in a Blues shirt before but he made his presence felt in big matches against France and eventual runners-up Argentina.

Here is the announcement from the official Chelsea FC website:

"Kenneth Omeruo has returned to Middlesbrough on loan until the end of the season. The defender spent the second half of the 2013/14 campaign on loan at the Riverside Stadium, helping the Teessiders to six clean sheets in his 14 appearances there.Comfortable at right-back or centre-back, the Nigerian was an ever-present for their World Cup campaign and was also an integral member of his country’s victorious African Cup of Nations team last year.We wish Kenneth well at Middlesbrough and you can keep updated with his progress here on the official Chelsea website.Source: ChelseaFC.com"

Regular first team football is the most important aspect of Kenneth Omeruo’s growth and he will certainly get that at Middlesbrough. He developed a good relationship with the manager there and has become a fan favorite in his short time there. Hopefully he can help Middlesbrough gain promotion back to the Premier League and impress the bosses at Chelsea enough to make the first team next season.
