Lampard’s Links: Champions League Playoffs

Today has been a busy day in the world of football. The draws for the UEFA Champions League playoffs and Europa League have been set. Arsene Wenger is still talking about other clubs, especially Manchester City, and Premier League clubs are forming partnerships with clubs in the MLS. Here are some links and stories from around the world of football!

  • UEFA Champions League playoffs have been set.  The biggest story is Celtic advancing to the next round despite losing both legs because Legia Warsaw fielded an ineligible player at the end of the second leg. Must be terrible for Legia but they really should have known better. Also Demba Ba gets to face some familiar foes when Besiktas and Arsenal go head to head.
  • The Europa League draw has also been set.  Tottenham face AEL of Cyprus and Hull City face Lokeren of Belgium. Chelsea FC loanee Thorgan Hazard and Borussia Monchengladbach will face Sarajevo of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • Sunderland have announced a partnership with MLS club DC United. How long before other clubs around Europe follow suit if only for the marketing opportunities? Manchester City have proven to be trailblazers once again. Are there any clubs you would like to see Chelsea partner with?
  • Aaron Ramsey wants to be the Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard for Arsenal. Last season was a good start but you’ve got a long way to go young fella. First step will have to be to be healthy for longer than half a season.
  • Arsene Wenger can’t stop talking about Manchester City. First it was about their ties with Melboure FC and NYC FC to skirt FFP rules and now it’s about why Frank Lampard would go on loan there before the NYC FC season begins.
