Chelsea FC midfielder Marko Marin has reportedly been loaned to Serie A club Fiorentina for the upcoming 2014/15 season. The reports also suggest that the loan could become permanent if Fiorentina so choose in the summer for a fee believed to be £4.2 million. Marin spent last season on loan at Sevilla where he won the Europa League trophy for the second year in a row but could not earn a permanent move.

The German midfielder is currently the 5th or 6th option for Chelsea and Jose Mourinho in attacking midfield and he is clearly surplus to requirements. He proved himself at the Bundesliga level but unfortunately for him his career has taken a wrong turn since he arrived from Werder Bremen in April of 2012. The reality is that Marin was signed before the club was guaranteed Champions League football when they won it just a few weeks later.

Marin was precisely the type of player that a non-Champions League club signs, one who is young and relatively unproven on the big stage of world football. Unfortunately for Marin, the club was back in the Champions League and it allowed them to sign high profile players like Eden Hazard. Suddenly, before he even pulled on a Chelsea shirt, Marko Marin was knocked down in the pecking order behind a player that many believed could be one of the best in Europe.

Marin made 15 appearances and scored once for the Blues in his solitary season with the first team. His season was hampered by injuries and the lack of continuity at the manager position so he was unable to establish himself. He was also held back by the play of Eden Hazard and even Victor Moses at the winger positions. The fact that he could not beat out the inconsistent Victor Moses proves that Marin was never Chelsea quality. He is a fine young player who can make a difference on the pitch, but not for a big time club like Chelsea. Best of luck to you in Italy, Marko!
