One of Chelsea FC’s brightest young prospects John Swift is spending the 2014/15 season on loan at Championship club Rotherham United. Rotherham manager Steve Evans is a big fan of the youngster and has promised to look after Swift and help him reach the next step in his development.

Evans also praised John Swift as a technical player who still has to improve defensively to win his place in the starting eleven. Swift is adept at playing any of the three attacking positions and can also play as a playmaker in central midfield.

Steve Evans on John Swift and his development:

"“This is a boy with a gift that needs nurturing. I made a promise to Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho that we would take good care of him here. I told them I would watch his development as if he was my own son and they have trusted me to do that.”“He’s come from a very big club, we knew what we were getting when we got him. He’s a good technical player but also needs to remember he has to defend as well. He’ll get better the more he learns. That’s why he’s here. He’ll improve the longer he goes on. He can play in a number of positions. He can play in midfield, he can play either flank, he can play as a striker.”Source: The Star"

The most important aspect of a loan move is for a player to have the trust of the manager he is temporarily playing for. If a player falls out of favor the way Victor Moses did last season then his season is wasted because that manager has no interest in the player’s development.

In John Swift’s case he clearly has the trust of Evans and the Rotherham United staff. He still has to improve to become a first team regular and must also adjust to the physicality of the Championship. With the backing of Evans and the support of Chelsea FC, John Swift is well on his way to making the next step in his development and to hopefully make the jump to the Chelsea first team.
