Jose Mourinho Thinks FC Barcelona Misused Cesc Fabregas

When Cesc Fabregas returned to FC Barcelona after his time at Arsenal many believed he would be the heir apparent in midfield to Xavi and Andres Iniesta. Unfortunately for Fabregas, and fortunately for Chelsea, things did not quite work out that way for the Spanish midfielder.

Instead Fabregas was played all over the field with mixed results. He played as a false-nine forward, a winger, and as an attacking midfielder in behind a non-traditional striker in Lionel Messi. With Chelsea he is playing alongside Nemanja Matic deep in midfield and Jose Mourinho thinks that is Fabregas’s best position.

Mourinho said about Fabregas, “when the players are your first choice it is very difficult to make a mistake. Fabregas was our first choice for that position. I know clearly what the player is because we were so long in the same league. He moved to Spain also, so for the last 10 years we have been in the same league for six or seven. I know exactly what he will bring.”

He spoke about Barcelona misusing Fabregas and said, “For Barca he was the fake nine, the number ten and winger but I know and he knows what is his best position so he is giving exactly what we need. Quick thinking in midfield. He brings people in the same direction. I am really happy.”

Many hailed Fabregas’s efforts in the first match and was the man of the match for the Blues. Mourinho spoke about the performance and said, “The team played very well but I agree with Cesc being man of the match because he and [Nemanja] Matic controlled the game and dictated the intensity of it. They decided how to control the pace. They were both good brains in this team and I am happy with that because last season we could not control the game as we controlled [it] today.”

Chelsea were lacking in steel and creativity in central midfield last season but now with the addition of Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas, the Blues have both in abundance. What a difference a year and a few transfer windows can make.
