Jose Mourinho Familiar With Mattia Destro From Days At Inter Milan

One of the strikers that Chelsea FC have been linked to is AS Roma forward Mattia Destro. The Italian international was Roma’s top scorer in Serie A last season and is one of the Giallorossi’s best young players. For financial reasons the capitol club is looking to sell the forward but the club’s brass has denied the move in the media.

Chelsea manager is familiar with Mattia Destro as the two overlapped when Mourinho was the manager of Inter Milan from 2008 to 2010. Destro was a youth player at Inter at the time but like Mourinho points out, he was too far down the pecking order to make the jump to the senior team during Mourinho’s reign. It is certainly no fault of Destro’s as he had some world class forwards like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Samuel Eto’o ahead of him at the time.

Jose Mourinho on Mattia Destro:

"“Mattia was a kid when I was at Inter, I think he was like 18. He was playing in the Primavera team, our under-21s, training with us so many times. Everyone knew at the club that his potential was there to be a top striker. He was unlucky because we had Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Adriano, then Samuel Eto’o, Diego Milito. So it was not easy for him to come into the first team. The ones that got the chance were Davide Santon and Giulio Donati.”Source: Sky Sports"

Reports have come out suggesting the Chelsea FC have agreed to terms with Queens Park Rangers for Loic Remy so it makes a move for Mattia Destro all the more unlikely. Adding Destro would make the striker position one of Chelsea’s great strengths but it may be difficult for Mourinho to keep all four of them happy.

Perhaps the clubs are working on a move for Mattia Destro to join the club this year but stay on loan with AS Roma for the season. There is certainly a precedent for a move like that and it would set up Chelsea’s future at the striker position once Didier Drogba inevitably retires.
