One of the chief complaints that many of Chelsea FC’s critics have is that the club rarely promotes players from the academy to the first team. Unfortunately they have a point as John Terry has been the only regular first teamer that came up through the Chelsea academy. Manager Jose Mourinho has vowed to change that and promoting Lewis Baker is the latest step in that transformation.

Lewis Baker is one of the most promising youngsters in the Chelsea academy. Last season he was the Young Player of the Year and also scored the Chelsea goal of the season with a cheeky backheel against the Arsenal U21s. He also lead the Chelsea U21s to a double when they won the U21 Premier League and the FA Youth Cup.

Moving up to the senior squad is the natural progression for Lewis Baker as he has already been more than impressive at the U21 level. His versatility could prove to be very useful as he will serve as great depth across the midfield positions. It is hard to see exactly where he will fit in but he could make some appearances in the League Cup and substitute appearances in the Premier League.

This season is a statement of intent for Jose Mourinho and Chelsea as they look to build for the future. The promotions of Lewis Baker, Andreas Christensen, and Nathan Ake to the senior team along with the signings of youngsters Kurt Zouma and Mario Pasalic show the club is focused on the future.

For the first time in a long time, the club has a manager that is focused on the long term and is actually competent unlike Andres Villas Boas. Jose Mourinho knows that he has the backing of the ownership and has the flexibility to make personnel decisions to build the team to win now and in the future as well. The promotion of Lewis Baker is the latest decision in that vein and it is a fantastic move for the youngster.
