One of the surprise decisions of the summer transfer window was Chelsea FC not sending out Kurt Zouma on loan and deciding to keep him in the senior squad. Instead of being out on loan Zouma is now the third choice centerback behind Gary Cahill, John Terry, and Branislav Ivanovic.

Kurt Zouma told ESPN about his readiness to step in to the spotlight if he needs to. He discussed a conversation that he had with Jose Mourinho and that the manager told him to be ready because he could be called on the way Raphael Varane was when he was at Real Madrid.

Zouma said: “[Mourinho] told me, ‘Varane, I made him start straightaway against City. You have to be ready at any time.’ I take Varane and Eliaquim Mangala as models. Today, they’re in the senior team. I hope to join them. Euro 2016 is an objective I have set myself. Even if places will be hard-earned, I’m aware of that. The door is not far.”

The young defender knows that he will not be playing very much at Chelsea but he is mature enough to realize that he has to work his way up. He said: “When I was at Saint-Etienne and I didn’t play, I immediately got annoyed. But I’ve learned. Now, there are experienced players, stars in my position, and they do very good work. I take my time. I learn alongside these defenders. I know my time will come.”

Kurt Zouma is one of the more promising young defenders in world football. He is a regular starter for the France U21s but has not yet made the jump the senior squad. Zouma knows that he must work hard to beat out the defenders in the French squad just like he has to work hard to try and beat out Terry and Cahill although winning the international job seems a bit more likely given the competition.
