One of the main issues with having a young squad is that many of the players have not had the chance to build a special connection with Chelsea FC as a club and not just where they cash their check. Obviously this is not a problem if all of the youngsters came up through the academy but that is not the case here. Didier Drogba knows what playing for Chelsea and playing at Stamford Bridge is all about and he wants to make sure the youngsters know that too.

More from Chelsea FC News

Drogba first came to Chelsea in 2004 as a hard headed youngster with a reputation for dabbling in football’s dark arts of simulation and other more dastardly deeds. He had a decent first touch but was very raw technically and it seemed that Chelsea had overpaid for the Marseille striker. Eight years later he left as a club legend with a cabinet full of trophies and a neck weighed down by medals.

The Ivorian striker knows that he may not be able to make the same impact he used to on the pitch but he can make an ever more important impact in the dressing room. “Even if the team is young, you can see we have quite a lot of qualities and experience in the game as well. Yes, I’m here to help but I’m also here to show, if I can say that, to show them the spirit” said Drogba. “Even if I don’t have any doubt about their desire to win, I’m here to help and I will give what I can. I’m preparing myself to give something extra to the team and achieve what we want to achieve.”

A very diplomatic response from a man well versed in the arts of diplomacy. Drogba proved on Wednesday that he can still play at a high level, but perhaps not consistently enough to be a first choice player. However it appears that Jose Mourinho’s mission in bringing Drogba back was to provide leadership and guidance to a young squad badly in need of it.
