Why I Hate Arsenal Football Club

As a Chelsea FC we have several options of which club to hate the most. Some of us hate Manchester United for their success, others Liverpool because of their smugness despite not winning a significant trophy in a very long time.  Tottenham is also a much hated club despite their general lack of success but perhaps that is more a product of proximity anything else

The Premier League club that I despise the most is Arsenal Football Club. I am indifferent to the success of Manchester United or Manchester City and while Liverpool is a close second, Arsenal tops the list. It is hard for me to muster up the energy to hate Spurs because I rarely see them as a threat. The 5-3 win on New Year’s Day was more of an aberration then a sign of things to come.

I rarely see Arsenal as a threat to Chelsea in the Premier league but what really irritates me is the smugness of their manager and their fans. Arsene Wenger complains on and on about how much money other clubs are spending when his club is consistently among the top spenders in England. He seems satisfied with the mediocrity of finishing fourth in the league every single season as long as he maintains his supposed moral high ground.

The fans constantly point to Arsenal’s policy of promoting young players from the academy to the first team as a sign of their moral superiority. If said player is not directly from the academy, then Arsenal fans point to the fact that they spent a little bit of money on a young player and then spent years developing them into superstars rather than spending big bucks on proven players.

The point that they seem to miss is that because of this policy Arsenal has become something of a development club for other teams. There is no doubt that Wenger has a keen eye for young talent. He bought and developed players like Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Robin Van Persie, and several others.

Henry left to Barcelona, as did Fabregas, and Van Persie and Nasri left for greener pastures in Manchester. Both Samir and Van Persie won their first significant trophies in England with the Manchester clubs. The same goes for Fabregas at Barcelona and even Henry won his first European trophy once he left Arsenal.

So how can Arsenal fans delude themselves into believing that they are still one of the big clubs in Europe if their best players are constantly leaving. 2014 appears to have begun a shift in the transfer policy as Wenger has spent big on players such as Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. That shift in policy has seen Arsenal potentially jump up two spots from their usual place in the table.

Another reason to dislike Arsenal and their fans is their smug attitude about the “beautiful football” that they play. They moan and groan about Chelsea and José Mourinho’s tactics, claiming that they simply park the bus and do not try to play football. If that was indeed the case with Chelsea then how could they have beaten Arsenal by a combined score of 8-0 in their last two match ups?

As for that beautiful football, what exactly has that won them in the past decade?  An FA Cup last season and a possible one this season does not justify the lack of spending over the last 10 years. Still somehow they dupe themselves into thinking that it was all worth it because they play beautiful football. Maybe it’s just me but winning matches and winning trophies is the most beautiful thing a team can do.

Let Arsenal have their moral high ground, their beautiful football, and their youth players. Chelsea fans will be more than happy with their European trophies and Premier League titles.
