Former Chelsea FC midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has become a superstar in the Bundesliga for Wolfsburg but it appears Jose Mourinho has no regrets about selling him. De Bruyne was recently named the Bundesliga player of the season ahead of big time players such as Arjen Robben of Bayern Munich and Karim Bellarabi of Bayer Leverkusen.

Mourinho told reporters, as quoted in the Daily Mail, that he “wanted to keep [De Bruyne]” but the Belgium interational said “it was not in his personality to be competing for a position in the team… he needed a team where he knows he can play every game. He needs to know that he is important.”

The manager continued and said, “He did not want a team where he thinks: ‘Am I playing or not?’ He needs that trust, he needs that quality. He needs that security. So I was not happy when he left. So it’s not fair.

Despite that initial unhappiness with the sale, Mourinho has come to terms with the sale and has taken his usual pragmatic approach to things. He is content with the fact that Chelsea FC made a profit off the player and said, “Players are players and they have different circumstances. We sold him, made our money and it was fantastic because we bought him cheap and sold him for a fantastic price. And now Wolfsburg, if they make a fantastic deal, that is good for them.”

The Blues paid around £8m for the midfielder in 2012 but sent him back on loan to his original club for the remainder of that season. He then joined the club for preasoson in the United States but was sent to Werder Bremen on loan for the 2013-14 season where he excelled. It seemed that he was primed for a big place in the Chelsea FC team but after a strange early season period where he was unhappy with his role, he was sold for around £16m to Wolfsburg.

We now know why he was sold but it comes as little surprise given the rumors we heard all throughout the process. There must be something in the water in Belgium as several of the young players Chelsea have bought from that country have expressed discontent with fighting for their roles in a team. Romelu Lukaku famously left for Everton because of similar reasons to Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois issued some subtle ultimatums about needing to play in every match.

Courtois has established himself as the Chelsea number one but that was after he went and became one of the best players in the world at his position at Atletico Madrid. As for De Bruyne, he has proven to be one of the bright young stars in Europe but that ship has sailed as far as a return to Chelsea FC. He has said publicly that he will never play for Jose Mourinho again and as far as Chelsea fans are concerned that is his loss.

We often forget how fragile some of these footballers’ egos can be and neither De Bruyne or Lukaku could handle being forced to win their place in a team. They chose to take the easy way out and play for smaller clubs rather than fighting to play in a Chelsea shirt and that is the sad reality. Chelsea Football Club is bigger than any one player and if they refuse to fight for the honor of playing for the club then they do not deserve it.
