Diego Costa is reportedly set to sign a blockbuster new deal with Chelsea, not long after rumours linked him with a move to China.

It seems like Diego Costa has played his cards right. The forward is on the verge of signing a new five-year deal with Chelsea which will make him the club’s highest earner. After rumours suggested that he was on the way to China, Costa has leveraged his position to negotiate a lucrative contract in West London.

The Sun reports that Costa has been offered a deal that will pay him over £200,000 per week, before bonuses are conferred.

"SunSport understands Costa and his representatives have reached an agreement in principle that will see him sign a five-year deal worth £220,000 a week PLUS bonuses which could send his pay soaring to £65m."

At one point, Costa looked to be leaving in January. A training ground row with Antonio Conte sent the tabloids into a frenzy, with the boss apparently yelling at him to ‘go to China’. However, the move didn’t materialise and Costa has returned to the starting eleven.

As was expected, his representatives have used the interest from China to negotiate a better deal. The Blues have caved and are offering an eye-watering package as a result.

The question is whether Costa deserves or warrants a deal of such magnitude. The striker was in fine form during the first half of the season, propelling the Blues through their unbeaten run. He has gone off the boil in recent weeks, notably since the reported row.

At the age of 28, Costa does not have many years left in him. Furthermore, he is not the most consistent performer for the Blues. The Spanish international is liable to a mental breakdown, in which he loses his cool and disappears from the game. In such situations Chelsea essentially play with ten men.

Many fans were actually happy to take the cash when the China rumours arose. The money being thrown around by clubs in the Chinese Super League is ludicrous. For an ageing, injury-prone forward the transfer seemed worth it.

However, it appears that the opposite has happened. No formal announcement has been made, but The Sun sound confident in their source. Having said that, this may be a ploy to draw an even more lucrative bid from China. A player tied down for the long term is significantly more valuable.
