Before the restart, Willian’s short-term extension was uncertain, but due to his recent form, Chelsea is now considering his long-term future.

A few weeks ago, Willian looked set for a Chelsea exit, just like Spanish veteran winger Pedro. However, his form in recent weeks might have given the Chelsea hierarchy something to reconsider. The Brazilian has been in superb form, racking up six goals and four assists in his last eight games either side of lockdown. His two assists against Crystal Palace saw him record a goal or an assist in four consecutive league games for the first time in his Chelsea career.

Tasked with the burden of being Chelsea’s new go-to man after the departure of Eden Hazard, Willian has stepped up for the Blues in a season where he has had more direct goal involvements than any of his teammates bar Tammy Abraham. This, in itself is reason enough for a new deal.

Due to the impending arrivals of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, Willian may not necessarily be guaranteed a starting spot next season, but he has shown in the past how useful he can be as a backup option. In a recent interview, Frank Lampard confirmed that talks regarding a new contract have begun and it’s not hard to see why.

While Chelsea’s rebuilding project is set to be spearheaded by youthful exuberance, a mix of experience is however required and Willian certainly provides that. As he enters into the twilight of his career, Willian could be set for an extended stay in west London where he will be looking to add to the major honors he has won so far.
