Responsibilities

With the aforementioned formation I have placed the two wide defenders as wing backs. I considered having a flat back four instead but it would possibly leave too much space for the opposition wide players to get a head of steam up on an attacking run. Start our wide guys slightly higher up and that can’t happen.

The defensive midfield position would revert back to being exactly that. Not a pivot role from which to start an attacking move with a 50-yard Hail Mary pass, but a spoiling role. Claude Makelele was the creator and master of this role and we should revert back to doing what Maka did in breaking the play up, passing short to a team mate and as a general rule of thumb not crossing the halfway line!

The central midfield roles are in a slightly advanced position because their role would primarily be to support the front three with runs into the box in attack after the ball is sent out wide. The defensive unit could take care of any opposition attacks once they were in our final 3rd leaving the central midfielders ready to launch the counter attack at speed. This in itself would prevent the opposition from pouring forward in numbers themselves too.

The front three in this formation would be there purely to create havoc in the opposition’s back line by staying forward ready to pounce as soon as the quick (sometimes) long ball is played up to them. By relieving them of any defensive duties they will be able to concentrate on their own interaction and movement and get back to doing what they do best, scoring goals!

The key to this attacking unit would be width. The wide attackers would have to stay wide and not come inside every time they run at the opposing defenders. With the two central midfielders free to attack it would mean that there would be at least three Chelsea players in the box already when a cross comes in.
