Ruben Loftus-Cheek

On the issue of academy prospects, recent reports have indicated that Ruben Loftus-Cheek is becoming tired of his situation at the club and may be clamouring for a January loan elsewhere. And who could blame him? If he can’t seem to get a game against a side like Norwich, when is he going to play?

In a recent article on the Daily Mail, the writer claimed that Ruben had failed to step up to the plate when called upon. Really? Who was named man-of-the-match against Maccabi Tel Aviv in Chelsea’s first European game?

In fact, since he made his debut for the club, he has failed to impress in just one competitive game: the 2-0 victory against Aston Villa when Mourinho decided to play him in an unfamiliar attacking midfield position and then brought him off at half time. He has since failed to make an appearance for the first team.

Personally, I think the lad would be better served by making a permanent transfer to a club more willing to make use of his impressive abilities. Patrick Bamford (currently at Crystal Palace), Josh McEachran (at Swansea in 2010), Nathaniel Chalobah (at Burnley last season) and Lucas Piazon (at Eintracht Frankfurt last season) are just a few of the top Chelsea prospects who have failed to make it at top tier loan clubs as few top division club sides are willing to give first team opportunities to loan players whom they have little chances of signing long term.
