RB Salzburg 1-2 Chelsea: 3 UCL talking points
Graham Potter’s relatively seamless transition to Champions League football with Chelsea
Are black turtleneck jumpers a prerequisite of managers in the Champions League, does anyone know? In all seriousness, the gaffer looks and acts the part at the Blues helm; he is amassing the results to back himself up. A fascinating fact about the Potter reign is that he’s matched William Lewis’s 1906/07 achievement to become the second undefeated Englishman following their first nine fixtures as CFC manager (the statistic refers to all competitions).
The former Ostersunds, Swansea City and Brighton & Hove Albion boss has a long way to go before he actually proves himself to the Blues faithful, let alone wins trophies consistently. That is if he is even given time to develop and evolve the starting lineup and a keen backup brigade. We are talking a good few seasons, here – irrespective of success in campaigns, within reason.
Nevertheless, I am of the opinion that the 47-year-old is right for Chelsea, especially at this moment. And, judging by some of the fruitful transfers secured whilst Potter with the Seagulls, while not forgetting Todd Boehly’s full and open wallet, the New Year and summer windows will be intriguing. Solid business is vital to build on the extremely solid foundation Potter is building.
