Taking a look at Chelsea Women’s newest signing Sjoeke Nusken
The ability to disrupt play is going to be a game changer for Hayes’ side, and while it may take some time to adjust to the WSL, the midfielder has shown she has what it takes on the international level. The new Blue has featured in 15 contests for her country including netting a goal in the World Cup qualifiers in 2023.
Like she always has been with new signings, Hayes is going to take it step by step throughout 2023/2024 with the German. Jelena Cankovic, and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd are perfect examples of the kind of role the 22-year-old could have in her first season. She will have the privilege to learn alongside a veteran leader like Sophie Ingle for a few years before she receives the baton from her.
The large number of midfielders on the roster could make it difficult for her to break into the squad, but recently on her national team and within her club, the youngster has featured as a center back. It is not her primary position, but if asked to do the job, Hayes knows that she already has shown she is capable of it. Eriksson’s departure could present Nusken with more playing time in the backline in her first season compared to the middle of the park. In fact, for the majority of the domestic campaign with Die Adler, Nusken has been asked to play in the center of a defense. Hayes has preached adaptability, and the new girl along with the 2022 summer signings embody that word to a tee.
