It has been the worst kept secret in world football this summer. Chelsea FC dreamt of signing Moises Caicedo from Brighton. The rumors started swirling as early as three months ago. While the hope was to get this wrapped up quickly, the reality was anything but that. It wasn’t until this past Monday when the long awaited X (Twitter) notification finally came through.

Chelsea fans from around the globe could exhale and finally know that we got our man. The man to fill the void in the squad we have been desperate to replace. Now that the transfer saga of the summer is finally over. Let’s take a look back to see what happened, what it means, and who comes out as the real winner here.

At the start of this saga, it seemed like all Chelsea had to do was cough up the dough. Doing plenty of business with Brighton in the past, the relationship seemed stable enough to enter negotiations, strike a deal, and get everything sealed and signed before afternoon tea. What transpired couldn’t have been further from that.

Chelsea and Brighton entered a back and forth that would have drawn massive crowds at the US Open. The Blues persisted, Brighton stuck to their guns regarding the asking price. It seemed all Chelsea had to do was pay the fee Brighton valued Caicedo at. Then at the 11th hour, Liverpool swept in and matched Brighton’s asking price. It seemed like Chelsea’s main target was off to Merseyside to join Jurgen Klopp’s ranks.

Liverpool were on the verge of beating Chelsea to Moises Caicedo’s signing

CFC fans went into an absolute uproar. How could their main target, who we’ve spent months trying to convince to join the Blues, be snatching up right from under our nose. It was a dark time. Fingers were pointed at the board. People were calling for resignations, our main defensive midfield target was gone. Not only that, many were keen to point out the fact that Caicedo was a diamond in the rough at that position and now he was gone.

Then the tides changed, Caicedo announced that he committed himself to Chelsea and that’s where he was going to go. Ball back in CFC’s court. All they had to do was pay more than what Liverpool offered. In the end, Chelsea broke the British transfer record, previously held by the West London outfit, to get Caicedo. It cost the Blues a whopping £115 million. It was finally over. CFC got the piece to their puzzle they have been searching for all this time. While everyone rejoiced, there were still a couple of eyebrows that were raised during this ordeal.

The first being Brighton’s asking price and Chelsea’s reluctancy to meet it for months. It was very public knowledge that Brighton valued Caicedo at £100 million, and CFC put in three separate bids over the course of just over two months. Each bid was rejected as it wasn’t close to Brighton’s asking price. Until Liverpool came in and put in a bid over £100 million.

It was only then that Chelsea tried their luck at £100 million. The main question becomes, why did the Blues wait so long to match Brighton’s valuation if in the end, they were going to pay it anyway. CFC could have had the deal wrapped up months ago, if they just put in the correct bid. Did they not want Brighton to be in the driver’s seat? Did they think they could maybe save a few million by low balling? Whatever the answer, Chelsea ended up paying more than what Brighton originally was asking for.

Who is the winner in Moises Caicedo transfer to Chelsea?

The next question is, who is the real winner of the Caicedo saga? While to the casual fan, it may seem like Brighton fleeced Chelsea, got more than what they asked for, and dictated the negotiations for months. It cannot be overlooked though what a massive boost this is for Chelsea. If for a second they thought this player was not worth it, I believe they would have pulled the plug on the whole deal.

The catch is, Caicedo really is worth it. He will be worth the constant back and forth, the refreshing of the Twitter feed, and the massive price tag. While there are certainly other factors to take into account, like the final pricing structure, the Blues will be able to sit back and rest easy knowing they have a fantastic player on their hands.

As I mentioned, Caicedo is a massive piece of the puzzle Boehly and Co have been working on. He could very well turn out to be the next best player in his position. A fantastic defensive midfielder, who can achieve great things.

He is the key to unlocking our midfield and Enzo Fernandez’s full potential. Caicedo is an aggressive, forward thinking, serial ball winner. His ability to win the ball and transform the field of play from defensive to attacking is a sight to see. His suspension and injury record are essentially non-existent. Knock on wood.

Caicedo will absolutely transform the way Chelsea plays. He will be the player that can help other players reach their true potential. While there are certainly remaining pieces of the puzzle that need to be addressed, Caicedo in a Chelsea shirt will be a wondrous sight for fans and a terror for opponents for many years to come.

Will the £115 million look like a bargain for Moises Caicedo?
