Midfielder Josh McEachran has joined Championship side Wigan Athletic on loan for the remainder of the season. McEachran was loaned to Watford at the start of the season but with manager and Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola leaving the post, the midfielder saw his opportunities grow few and far in between. Chelsea brass are clearly hoping that the 20-year old has another successful loan spell similar to the one he enjoyed with Middlesbrough.
This loan spell is especially important for a player whose career seems to be on the downturn, which is a bit ridiculous to say about someone so young but it may be the case. McEachran made his senior debut under Carlo Ancelloti in 2010 and even started a few Premiership and Champions League matches during that campaign. At that point it seemed that the sky was the limit for the young Englishman but after Ancelloti was sacked, McEachran’s career took a turn for the worst. A five-year contract extension was followed by a disastrous loan to Swansea City where he only made five total appearances for the mid-table Premiership side. It was then decided that Championship loans were the way to go but it was strange to see a player who was once deemed good enough to start a Champions League match relegated to the bench at Swansea or Middlesbrough.
Regardless of what comes of this current loan, it is clear that McEachran is a talented and confident player who only needs the minutes to prove that once again. Best of luck to you at Wigan, Josh!
