Reports: Didier Drogba to Join MLS Club Seattle Sounders

Galatasaray and former Chelsea FC striker Didier Drogba is rumored to be heading to Major League Soccer after the current season is over. There are claims that this is already a done deal but neither the MLS nor Galatasaray have confirmed that Drogba will be coming to the Seattle Sounders to partner with Clint Dempseyn.

Tweets from a Sounders blogger and an announcer for beIN Sports discussing the deal:

This would be a major signing for the Sounders both on and off the field. Drogba’s talent is undeniable even in his mid-30s and his legendary status will fill seats and sell jerseys like few players can. The Sounders fanbase is already very passionate and their stadium is regularly filled to capacity so selling tickets is not a challenge for them. This Drogba signing however will increase global awareness of the club especially among Chelsea fans around the world. There is also a large contingent of Chelsea fans in the US that will be queuing up to see their hero play in person. Even casual fans of European soccer in America will be curious enough to come see Drogba play.

At 35 years old, it’s obvious that Drogba’s illustrious career is winding down and despite a very respectable scoring record this year (12 in 29 appearances) the Ivorian may be looking for another challenge after his stint in Turkey comes to an end. He is still a tremendous threat in European soccer and with the World Cup coming up so soon he is surely looking to maintain his form. While this move makes sense in a lot of ways, its possible that Drogba will wait until after the World Cup to make a decision on his future.
