Often in sports all the glory will go to the primary playmakers, or scorers. The one’s who score the points or goals usually make the headlines, while the less glamorous or defensive players may get overlooked. Has this been happening this season with Chelsea FC’s Cesar Azpilicueta? A right fullback by trade, and natrually right footed, Azpilicueta has stepped in as the preferred left fullback this season for the Blues. And for a man playing out of position, he has produced excellent results that may have gon unnoticed by some fans.

By the numbers, Azpilicueta has been one of the best defenders, if not the best on the team this season. He leads the team in tackles per game with 3.6, and comes up third on the team in interceptions per game with 1.3. Additionally, he holds an average match rating for the season of 7.21, placing him behind only Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill.

In one of his better this games this season, the 3-0 victory over Newcastle United, you can see his defensive contributions. He has only two failed tackles, compared to a number of successful tackles, clearances, and interceptions. Those states can be found here. On the other hand, his attacking in the same game was not too bad either, completing a few passes in the attacking end and even creating a scoring chance, something he isn’t normally asked to do.

So far, Azpilicueta has himself cemented as the preferred left fullback, but should it stay that way? Should Mourinho start to give Ashley Cole more opportunities, particularly in the upcoming champions league matches? Only time will tell, but up until now, Cesar has put in a valiant effort while playing out of position, and should be commended for it.
