Jose Mourinho Calls Out Strikers…Again

In his post match press conference, Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho was again critical of his strikers after Andre Schurrle and Fernando Torres both put in less than memorable shifts for the Blues today. Schurrle was given the surprise start over the Spaniard and cut an isolated figure for much of the first half. Nothing he did was memorable and if registered a shot on goal it was not a very good one. Mourinho conceded that Schurrle is not a striker but he certainly expected more from the German.

Mourinho’s scathing comments about his strikers:

"“If we had their strikers we’d be winning things, of course. I’m not happy with my strikers’ performances, so I have to try things. With Andre, at least, I know we have one more player to have the ball. He’s not a striker but the team can have control of the ball possession. But football is not just about that. It’s also about scoring goals, getting behind, and that is for strikers, real strikers. And I had to try. With top strikers at this level, it’s one chance = one goal. We don’t have that.”"

Jose Mourino brought on Fernando Torres early in the second half but he was just as ineffective as Schurrle. In fact he may have been worse as he killed some of Chelsea’s counter attacks by losing possession or making a poor decision in the attacking third. At least Schurrle had the decency to stay out of the way and not ruin attacks but he seemed to decide that he would not contribute. Torres’s confidence must be at a new low after being relegated to the bench for a big European encounter but if he wants to move to another club he must use that as motivation to impress whoever his suitors might be.
