Diego Costa Could Be the New Drogba

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has backed Chelsea FC to sign Atletico Madrid and Spain striker Diego Costa in the summer transfer window. Redknapp compared Costa to former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba in his directness and pace. Costa may not be as technical as Drogba is now but the Ivorian developed that part of his game later in his career.

Redknapp on Diego Costa and the future of the striker position at Chelsea:

"“If Costa was to come to Chelsea then [Fernando] Torres could go back to his first love: Atletico Madrid. That might be a move that makes sense. He is, make no mistake, a brilliant striker. He’s got that pace and is almost Drogba-like with his ability to run beyond people. He has a left foot, he can drive and he can score his own goals. When we look at Chelsea at the moment I don’t see Torres or [Samuel] Eto’o as the answer for the long term and don’t have the ability to do what Diego Costa can do.”"

The major point that Redknapp makes is that Costa is capable of scoring his own goals which the current Chelsea strikers have struggled to do consistently. How many times have Chelsea fans seen Drogba make a goal out of nothing? He could take a ball hoofed up field and use his size to win the header and his pace to run on to it and score. Costa has that same directness, physical presence, and confidence to make similar plays for the Blues.

Chelsea have been and will be linked with every striker available this summer and Costa is a very real option. He plays for a “selling” club and is a relatively young player with his best years ahead of him. He is similar to Drogba in that he began his club career relatively later than the average footballer. Chelsea will have to add a striker in the summer and Costa would fit that need hopefully for years to come.
