Chelsea FC: Jose Mourinho Fined £8k For Aston Villa Incident

Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho has been fined £8000 for misconduct late in the second half of the Premier League match against Aston Villa last month. Mourinho was sent to the stands after asking referee Chris Foy for an explanation following the scuffle after Ramires was sent off for a stomp on Villa’s Karim El-Ahmadi. Mourinho seemed dumbfounded as to why he was sent off the pitch but left without further incident.

After the match, the FA charged Mourinho with misconduct and that he would not be suspended but that a fine would be levied. Rather than take things lying down, Mourinho fought back and told the media that he would be appealing the charge based on principle. Unfortunately for Mourinho, he was found guilty of the charge and his substantial pockets are going to be a tad thinner this week.

The full FA Statement can be found here but here is the important part:

"Mourinho denied a breach of FA Rule E3 in that his behaviour in re-entering the field of play and approaching the Match Referee in an attempt to speak to him, in or around the 90th minute of the game against Aston Villa on 15 March 2014, amounted to improper conduct. However, the charge was found proven at a personal hearing on Wednesday 9 April."

There is not much to be read in to this situation, Mourinho broke the rules according to the letter of the law and he was punished for it. A fine is no big deal and a suspension was never really an option for the FA so no real harm done. The only problem is that it does create a “history” for Mourinho with the FA so his next inevitable misconduct may be judged a bit more harshly because of this incident. Keep on doing your thing Jose even if it does cost you a couple thousand quid.
