Diego Costa Injured Against Getafe But Cleared To Face Chelsea FC

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa suffered what many thought was a horrific injury on the weekend when he scored against La Liga rivals Getafe but slammed his shin in to the post on his follow through. Costa looked to be in a great deal of pain as cameras showed the big striker writhing around in pain and what looked like a large bloody hole below his knee. The physios rushed in and he was stretchered off with what appeared to be a broken leg or at the very least a fracture which would likely rule him out for the rest of the season and perhaps even the World Cup.

Thankfully for Atletico Madrid fans and anyone with a sense of decency, Diego Costa was fine and X-rays showed no signs of fractures or damage to the bone. It seems like it was just an extremely painful and ugly looking injury but nothing too serious. Atletico manager Diego Simeone was asked about the injury and replied that “Costa is fine, he is happy. He made a great effort throughout. One more cut does not do anything to this tiger”. The club’s press officer Jose Luis Pasques tried to inject some humor in to the situation by posting on his Twitter that “It’s all OK. Just need to fix the post”.

For those of us with a rooting interest in the tie between Chelsea FC and Atletico, a small part of us may have been hoping that Costa would be ruled out for at least two weeks. A return date of May 1st sounded like a great idea but it looks like Costa will be able to shake it off. At the same time however, a gaping wound that big may require stitches and in a sport where getting kicked in the shins is part of the game, we may still see Diego taking a bit of a layoff to fully recover.

Here is a video of the goal and injury if you’re in to that sort of thing:
