Chelsea FC’s Fernando Torres and Cesar Azpilicueta have been named to the 30 man provisional Spain World Cup squad. Azpilicueta was a guaranteed pick and has further cemented his status as a regular after a fantastic season in which he was named the Chelsea Players’ Player of the Year. Torres was more unsure of his status and publicly lobbied for his place in the squad through the media. While he has not been in the best of form for Chelsea, his competition has not been all the great either.

More from World Cup

David Villa has battled injury for much of the 2013/14 campaign and Alvaro Negredo was off to a blistering start to his campaign but has since petered off and is on somewhat of a goal drought. Fernando Llorente has scored 15 goals in 33 games for Juventus but has had a relatively quiet season for Turin giants. Torres still has to beat out the rest of the forwards for a seat on the plane but his experience and big game reputation may be enough to seal the deal.
