Queens Park Rangers chief executive Philip Beard has dismissed the rumors that the club will sign both Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand on free transfers this summer. Twitter was buzzing with the rumors as soon as QPR had earned promotion to the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Derby County. Ferdinand’s younger brother Anton currently plays for the Hoops and manager Harry Redknapp is Lampard’s uncle and gave him his first shot in professional football.

Rio Ferdinand has officially parted ways from Manchester United but Frank Lampard’s future with Chelsea is still uncertain. He was listed on the Premier League released player list but his contract has not officially expired yet and many pundits believe that he will sign a one year extension with the Blues.

Philip Beard on the Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand speculation:

"“We’re used to it at QPR now. We’re linked with everybody, so it’s no surprise. They are fantastic players, I’m sure Frank Lampard, at the moment, is worried about a certain tournament in Brazil.Anything you’re going to read over the next few days is pure speculation. Tony [Fernandes, QPR owner] is in London, the other owners are either in London or have traveled back to different parts of the world. We’ve arranged to talk on Friday. That’s when we’re going to sit down with Harry and with some of the scouts, we’ve got lists of players, but I can promise you that anything you read at the moment is pure speculation.”"

Lampard’s connections or links to QPR are tenuous at best but stranger things have happened in the Premier League. He would get regular first team football with QPR but he has far too much history with Chelsea to play for another team in England. If Lampard was to leave the Blues this summer then the MLS or some other foreign club is a much more likely destination than Loftus Road.
