Chelsea FC youngster and World Cup bound Nigerian defender Kenneth Omeruo recently signed a three year contract extension with the club and wants to use the World Cup as a stage to prove he is ready for the first team. Omeruo has spent a fine season on loan at Middlesbrough and has seen his stock rise in English football with every masterful performance at centerback.

The Nigerian is also already a full international for the Super Eagles and has already been named to the World Cup squad and will likely start at the heart of defense. At the age of 20 all of this makes Omeruo seem miles ahead of the other Chelsea prospects and gives him a bit more leverage in contract negotiations.

Kenneth Omeruo on his new contract and his hopes for the World Cup:

"“I’ve been working towards a new contract and I am really happy it is done. I’m very confident and I know I have to prove myself more to get a chance. Going to the World Cup is an opportunity to show myself and prove that I am ready to play in the first-team. I’m enjoying myself here in England and settling down to the football. I just need to take the opportunities when presented to me, stay focused, do my best and show the manager what I’m capable of doing.”"

Omeruo is one of many fantastic young prospects at centerback in the Chelsea youth and loan system. If he is to break in to the first team, he will face stiff competition from the likes of Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen, Tomas Kalas, and not to mention the senior pair of John Terry and Gary Cahill. Kenneth Omeruo will likely be loaned out again next year but hopefully to a Premier League club where he can really test his abilities against the best of the best.
