Steven Gerrard: I Can Play With Frank Lampard

England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said in a press conference today that he and Frank Lampard can play together in midfield and that he is bored of this debate. The subject of the Lampard-Gerrard midfield has been hotly debated since their first tournament together at Euro 2004 with many fans and pundits believing that the two can not play together in the middle of the park.

The pundits and fans believe that the two players are far too similar to play together because they both try to do the same thing. Roy Hodgson and other England managers have tried playing other midfield combinations and are still looking for the perfect mix. Gerrard however feels that they are able to adapt to any manager’s tactics and should have no problem playing alongside each other.

Steven Gerrard on the England midfield debate:

"“Gerrard and Lampard, is no-one bored of that one yet? I agree with Roy and I have said it many times on record that good players can play together and good players need to be able to adapt and take on a manager’s tactics. We don’t want a team of individuals who want do it alone. The only way we are going to be successful as a team is if the combinations as a team work and we take on the manager’s tactics.”"

While it seems a bit silly to say that two of England’s greatest midfielders cannot play together, the critics may have a point. Both Gerrard and Lampard were at one point dynamic attacking midfielders who would operate high up the middle of the park. Now both of them have become more deep lying play makers with Gerrard operating in front of the back four more often than Lampard. Either way, if England is to succeed at the World Cup then they must find the right combination in central midfield.
