Midfielder Eden Hazard offered his support to Chelsea FC and Belgium national teammate Romelu Lukaku after the striker struggled in his first two World Cup matches against Algeria and Russia. Romelu Lukaku was substituted before the 60th minute in both matches after he struggled in possession and with his first touch and generally looked off the pace.

Eden Hazard offered some explanation as to why the striker has struggled so much by saying that “Lukaku has not been able to have much possession of the ball and he did not have much space at all and that’s what I told him in the dressing room” but Hazard insisted that Romelu Lukaku still “contributed to the victory”. Lukaku’s contributions have been in question but Hazard already has two assists to his name for the winning goals in both matches.

Belgium coach Marc Wilmots also commented on Romelu Lukaku and said, “if he has to go off after 55 minutes or so he’s not happy of course, that’s natural. It’s not a problem, it’s normal and it happened to me as well”. There was some controversy surrounding the way Lukaku reacted to being substituted after he refused to shake Wilmots’s hand but the coach said that he “understand[s] his reaction completely and I will analyse things with him, but I need all my players and the truth of today is not always the truth of tomorrow”.

Romelu Lukaku has said going in to the World Cup that he believes he is the complete striker but he has certainly not looked the part so far. He has looked frustrated with his technical ability, his inability to maintain possession, and of course being substituted early in both matches. Lukaku needs to show the growth and maturity that Jose Mourinho requires of his strikers if he is to win the Chelsea striker job and luckily for him he will have at least two matches to prove it.
