Reports from news outlets around Europe are suggesting that Chelsea FC leftback Patrick Van Aanholt is on the verge of completing a transfer to Sunderland AFC this weekend. These same reports claim that the youngster has even passed the medical at Sunderland and the move is all but official with the clubs already agreeing on terms.

Van Aanholt is in the last year of his Chelsea contract but appears to have already decided that he will not be returning to the club after last season. He was asked a few weeks ago where he will be playing next year and he replied by saying “where will I play next season? I don’t know yet. It definitely won’t be at Chelsea. I am done here.”. So good on the lad for at least being clear with his intentions rather than beating around the bush or trying to be coy about wanting a transfer out.

Some Chelsea fans backed Patrick Van Aanholt to become the next great Chelsea left back but it appears the hype was not real. He has been a serviceable defender wherever he has played but he has never shown enough to convince Chelsea brass that he can be the long term solution at left back. Rather than keep him around and try to convince him to stay, the club has decided to cash in on him while they still can.

This potential move to Sunderland is best for both parties because the Black Cats get a player who has some Premier League appearance and Van Aanholt finally gets the chance to play regularly for a top flight English team. He has spent time on loan at Newcastle United in the past but it was short emergency loan and he was never able to fully settle in. If, or when, this move is made official then we wish Patrick Van Aanholt the best of luck at his new club, just not when he plays against Chelsea.
