Thibaut Courtois Hopes To Learn From Petr Cech At Chelsea FC

Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois told Chelsea TV that he can learn a lot from the experienced Petr Cech. The young keeper is in the midst of a controversy over who should start for Chelsea but if he keeps his head down, mouth shut, and works hard this season in a keeper by committee this then it is likely that Petr Cech will be sold next summer. In the meantime, Thibaut Courtois would do well to learn everything he can from Petr Cech and Mark Schwarzer as well. This could be an excellent situation for a 22 year old to come in to if he handles it correctly.

Courtois is getting better and better at saying the right things. He must be receiving some coaching from his agent and the Chelsea staff because before the World Cup he made comments that him and Cech being in the same dressing room would be “unhealthy”. Many fans were of the opinion that the only people that having both keepers would be unhealthy for are opposing attackers.

"“Petr has had a really nice 10 years here. He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world. You can learn a lot from every keeper you train with. Every goalkeeper can have a type of thing they are usually good at so when you see them train you can learn from him and other keepers, too. It helps you during your training. I signed with Chelsea three years ago but because of the loan it took until Thursday to have my first training session, so I’m really happy to be here.”“We have a really good team of players, a lot of quality – it will be a real battle to be in the starting XI. That’s good because if you want to win all the trophies in one season, you need a big group with a lot of quality. If there are only 12-13, you can’t achieve that. We need everybody and hopefully we can win the trophies. It’s great there is competition for places. With Belgium we experience the same thing. It helps the players improve and play even better.”-Thibaut CourtoisSource: Sky Sports"

Chelsea are in the incredibly enviable situation of having two of the best goalkeepers in the world on their squad. There were concerns that Thibaut Courtois’s ego could prove to be an issue, and it still might, but as of now he is saying and doing all the right things. Chelsea may yet sell Petr Cech in this transfer window but the ideal situation would be to let the two of them play this season and sell Cech next summer.

Courtois is only 22 and can be Chelsea’s keeper for the next 15 years but Petr Cech is a club legend and deserves to be end his career in dignity. He should not be cast aside like Yossi Benayoun or some other Chelsea misfit, but should be given a chance to prove that he is healthy and then sold to a competitive club that would put him in a good situation. If in the meantime he can teach young Thibaut the ropes then that would only serve to increase his already legendary status at Stamford Bridge.
