If you could find one glaring weakness in the Chelsea FC lineup or squad in the past few seasons, what would it be? The easy, and correct, answer would be at the striker position. All of the players, save for Fernando Torres, have been stopgap solutions or players who were too young to fully trust as Chelsea’s target man.

That is why, in the words of Jose Mourinho, Diego Costa is truly the player and striker that we have been waiting for. Mourinho said “This is the player we bought and we were waiting for since last season. This is why we didn’t buy a striker in the winter market. We were waiting for him, we have him and hopefully everything goes well.”

Mourinho may have only been waiting for one season but Chelsea fans have been waiting since the start of the 2012 season. Even with Drogba on board back then his effectiveness was waning and a long term replacement was yet to be found. Daniel Sturridge was on board and so was Romelu Lukaku but the jury was still out on whether they could handle being Chelsea’s number one.

So what can we expect from Diego Costa, Chelsea’s first true target man since Drogba in his prime? Mourinho said, “What can we expect? I expect Diego. And Diego is a team player who works hard, he’s not just about goals. It’s about his defensive work, mentality and ambition.” That mentality is what sets a Mourinho striker apart from your average striker. He demands commitment in all aspects of the game, not just scoring goals from his target man.

As for how Diego Costa is adapting to the Premier League and his teammates, Mourinho had an answer for that too. He said, “He looks adapted to the team, and the Premier League, not just Chelsea, should be happy. Sometimes we lose important players going to other countries and sometimes we bring new top players here.” Well Diego Costa is certainly a top player and is one of the most important signings for Chelsea in recent years.
