When you think of the differences between Fernando Torres and Mario Balotelli there are certainly more than a few. One is a veteran striker on the downside of his career who is short on confidence but long on experience. The other is a young and fiery forward who has the best years of his career ahead of him.

According to AC Milan’s new goalkeeper Diego Lopez, Fernando Torres will be a more “useful” player for the Italian club. Lopez is familiar with Fernando Torres from the Spanish national team and had a lot of very good things to say about the striker.

“He’s a great signing. We’re talking about a player who has done amazing things, who has experience, speed, and will be important. Balotelli? Torres will be more useful as he has shown the characteristics needed to win,” said Lopez to the Milan Channel.

While it does sound a little strange to say, Fernando Torres may in fact be more useful to AC Milan than Mario Balotelli. He will certainly sell more shirts if that is something you care about but he can also be more useful on the pitch as well.

Balotelli is notorious for his terrible work rate. When he does not have the ball or is not attacking the opposition, he does not track back in defense or even mark a man at set pieces. Balotelli also only registered one assist in his whole time at Manchester City so it shows that his game is one-dimensional, even if that dimension is fantastic.

Fernando Torres will add some hustle to the AC Milan lineup and while he may not be as prolific as he once was, he can still be an asset in other parts of the game. He will track back, play out of position, play on the wings, play defense, and mark attackers in set pieces. Diego Lopez may have sounded a little silly when he made those comments but he may end up being right.
