Chelsea FC’s 3rd Striker, Didier Drogba Or Patrick Bamford?

Chelsea FC loanee Patrick Bamford revealed this weekend that had the Blues not brought back Didier Drogba in the summer he would have been the third striker in the squad. At the time he was loaned out to Middlesbrough, Chelsea had not made the signing of Loic Remy official but it was certainly in the works.

That would explain why they were comfortable letting Patrick Bamford leave on loan when they technically only had two strikers in the squad in Drogba and Diego Costa. Keep in mind that this was before Fernando Torres made his own move to AC Milan official but again the club was definitely already working on sending him packing.

Patrick Bamford on the possibility of him being Chelsea’s third striker:

"“The original plan was to stay at Chelsea and be a third striker this season. But the chance came to bring Didier Drogba back. Jose said I could stay if I really wanted but he said for my development and to make sure I am ready for Chelsea, the best option for me was to go out and play again.”"

We definitely agree with Jose Mourinho in this case. Regular football is what Patrick Bamford needs and he is getting it at Middlesbrough. While there is benefit to training with the Chelsea first team, there is no substitute for live game action and live game competition.

So with all that information coming, who would you have preferred as Chelsea’s third striker this season? Would you have preferred the club keep Patrick Bamford so he can learn to play with his Chelsea teammates, or are you pleased with the experience and leadership that Drogba brings?
