Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock was charged by the English FA for his comments after the match against Chelsea FC this weekend. Warnock spoke about the referee Craig Pawson after the match and said that there “was much to be desired” about his performance. Neil Warnock also said that his defender Damien Delaney was sent off because Chelsea FC players influenced the referee.

Thankfully the FA did the right thing and charged Neil Warnock considering he did the same thing they have consistently charged Jose Mourinho for whenever he speaks his mind after a match. There is a thin line about what a manager can say about a match referee and not be charged but it is clear that Warnock crossed it.

Here is the statement from the FA about Neil Warnock’s charge:

"Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock has been charged by The FA for misconduct in relation to media comments he made after the game against Chelsea on 18 October 2014.It is alleged that Warnock’s post-match comments constituted improper conduct in that they implied the match referee was motivated by bias; and/or brought the game into disrepute, in contravention of FA Rule E3[1].Warnock has until 6pm on 27 October 2014 to respond to the charge.Source: TheFA.com"

Neil Warnock disputed the charge in the media and said, “As long as you don’t question their integrity – and I don’t think I did that, I questioned his experience really or the influence of certain things in the game but not his integrity.” By calling out the referee’s experience Warnock was essentially saying that he was not qualified to referee a Premier League match and thus he called in to question the integrity of the FA. It is not the worst thing a manager has said about a referee but it certainly meets the criteria for a charge from the FA.
