Chelsea FC Hire Christian Purslow To Manage Global Commercial Activities

Chelsea FC hired former Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow to manage the club’s global commercial activities to grow their brand internationally. This hire comes in the wake of Chelsea FC chief executive officer Ron Gourlay leaving the club after a stint that began in 2005 as he helped oversee the most successful period in the club’s long and illustrious history.

Christian Purslow was only employed by Liverpool for two years from 2009 to 2011 but he was involved in landing the club a lucrative shirt sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered Bank that was worth £80 million over four years. He was also embroiled in a controversy when former Liverpool owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett tried to remove him from the board so he would not go through with the sale of the club to the NESV Group. The sale would eventually go through but Purslow would step down following its completion.

Statement from Chelsea FC on the hiring of Christian Purslow:

"“The club has ambitious plans to build the Premier League’s most pioneering global commercial programme, partnering with innovative and market-leading organisations from around the world.“The club believes Mr Purslow has the vision and the leadership qualities to help us achieve these plans.‎”Chelsea does not expect to announce any other senior appointments in the near future.“As announced last week, Chairman Bruce Buck and Director Marina Granovskaia have assumed the executive responsibilities held by our former chief executive.”Source: Sky Sports"

Though he does not have a very long track record in football but he was tremendous in securing that lucrative shirt sponsorship deal as well as handling the sale of Liverpool to the current owners. The sale also helped reduce the club’s debt significantly and the Reds have experienced success in the Premier League after a series of not quite good enough finishes. Christian Purslow will not be asked to clear out Chelsea FC’s debt but any impact he has on the bottom should be a positive for the club as a whole.
