Reports: Fernando Torres To Atletico Madrid On A Free Transfer

Reports out of Italy suggest that Chelsea FC striker Fernando Torres, who is currently on loan to AC Milan, may be on his way to his boyhood club Atletico Madrid. Torres is in the first few months of a two year loan at Milan but the Rossoneri are already experiencing some buyer’s remorse and are hoping to offload the striker. He has only scored one goal in ten appearances in Serie A and has not made an appearance since the Milan derby on November 23rd.

Chelsea FC has been ruled out as a destination for Fernando Torres even though the Blues still own the rights to the striker. Mourinho said that it is impossible for Torres to return because of the squad’s constraints and the cap on the number of foreign players allowed in a Premier League squad. If he did indeed return to Chelsea he would likely be sent to the reserve squad and would not even make a match day squad unless disaster struck for the Blues.

So after Chelsea FC was ruled out, the rumors began to swirl that Torres will be offered to a number of Premier League clubs on a free transfer. Unfortunately it is hard to imagine any of the teams in the English top flight improving by bringing him on. Perhaps one of the relegation candidates such as Burnley or Leicester City could bring him on but that would risk the chemistry of the squad so do not count on that happening either.

What seems to make the most sense is a return for Fernando Torres to the club where he literally grew up in Atletico Madrid. Atleti currently start Mario Mandzukic and bring Italian forward Alessio Cerci off the bench. There are rumors that Milan offered Torres plus cash in a swap deal for Cerci but Atletico turned them down. Cerci has only scored once for Atletico so far this season but they must see something in him, or they simply do not rate Torres whatsover.

Even if it is an unlikely scenario it would give Torres a chance to play in important matches and even make an appearance in the Champions League where he has done well in recent years. If he was to make the move back to Madrid he would be the third striker in the rotation but it would be an emotional return for Torres and a chance to potentially end his career back where it started.
