Chelsea FC are reportedly interested in adding Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane to strengthen the back four and ‘super agent’ Jorge Mendes is said to be in full swing to get the deal through. The Frenchman’s future is under speculation after being overlooked by head coach Carlo Ancelotti. It is rumoured that Chelsea are a number of suitors looking to sign Varane who could be available for 15 million pounds.

The most realistic transfer would be to West London due to his relationship with Jose Mourinho – the coach who brought him to Madrid from Lens. The 21-year-old is a favourite of the Portuguese manager who described him as “the best young central defender in the world.”

Chelsea is set to blow any team out of the water offering to triple his 1.2 million euro a year salary to lure him to Stamford Bridge. With the current form slump of Gary Cahill and the aging John Terry, the acquisition would not only address Chelsea’s current defensive issues – he would also become an imperative piece of the Blues going forward.

With Kurt Zouma already part of future plans partnering him with his compatriot would be a home run for Mourinho. Raphael Varane’s skill set compliments Zouma and together would be the perfect partnership for the Blues for years to come. Varane is pacy, makes good decisions and reads the game well for a young player – he is also able to play the sweeper role due to his composure. Zouma on the other hand is physical strong and very confident with the ball on his feet.

The Blues could encounter some serious competition for his services with Bayern Munich also interested. Manager Pep Guardiola has said to have already contacted Varane’s agent Mendes to negotiate a 20 million pound deal to bring him to the Allianz.

Meanwhile in the Spanish capital Ancelotti has poured cold water on the rumours insisting he will remain at the Bernabeu.  “I’m surprised because I didn’t know Mendes was his agent,” the Italian revealed. “Three days ago he had a different agent. “Varane will be a Madrid player for a long time.”

With the Champions League holders lacking cover at centre-half it would be difficult to envision them selling Varane unless they got cover. Though, with Mendes in Varane’s corner anything is possible. Manchester United are also said to be interested, with Louis Van Gaal looking for a young partner to join Matts Hummels who is set to move to Old Trafford.

Raphael Varane’s experience is unrivalled for any player his age having already won titles with Real Madrid and playing for France at a World Cup. Blues fans will hope this transfer occurs for what Varane will provide the club in the future. Combined with the strength and no-nonsense style Zouma offers, the Blues would be looking at the most formidable defensive partnership of the next decade.
