Chelsea FC: Is It Time For Oscar To Leave?

Jose Mourinho has problems at Chelsea FC which most managers wish they had. His quandary is that he has to choose a first 11 among immense talents which he has at his disposal. With the likes of Eden Hazard, Juan Cuadrado, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, few managers can even imagine having that kind of depth.

Jose came back to Chelsea FC in 2013 and immediately made his mark upon the team by selling two time Chelsea player of the year Juan Mata, as he didn’t fit the profile of a player which Mourinho wanted as his number 10. Mata, in the previous season had more than 30 assists in all competitions and a good number of goals to his name but didn’t have a defensive aspect to his game.

It is hard to be player under Mourinho. Even if one is great in attacking, he has to be confident and sturdy defensively and track back to retrieve the ball as soon possession is lost. Mata did not track back and thus found himself out of favor at Chelsea FC.

Oscar was the player around whom Mourinho wanted to build the new Chelsea. He was impressed by Oscar’s all round play, as he was moving forward with a good pace and also could track back making tackles thus helping out defensively.

But recently, I have noticed that Oscar has been far off from the player which Chelsea FC need him to be. Yes, he has been supplying the front line with occasional assists and also scoring some himself, but his good days on the pitch are very rare which can be a major problem.

With Hazard coming up on the left and Willian on the right, I think when they are on the pitch, more things are likely to happen for the Blues. But with Oscar, I get a feeling that he will have a decent game where he will do just what is asked of him. He won’t go that extra mile or be the spark when the team needs someone to step up.

Whenever we are having a bad day, we always expect the Hazards and the Costas to step up with that crucial moment which can win a tough game, but I thought Oscar would also be one of the warriors, towards whom we can look up and expect the same moments of magic.

Unfortunately that hasn’t happened as much as I would have liked. I was really excited with having Oscar as a Chelsea player, when he seemed to have established himself on the global stage with that wonder strike against Juventus in the Champions League. But his form has been really inconsistent and I don’t see that hunger and that enthusiasm to win each and every ball, get in the faces of opponents like Costa does in each and every game.

Yes, he is important in the Chelsea squad but I sometimes I feel that I would rather have Willian in that number 10 role rather than Oscar, as I think Willian is much more committed in each and every action he performs on the pitch.

It is his third season at the Bridge and I won’t say it has been an impressive three seasons. Somehow even after seeing him play for so long in the English league, I still feel that he hasn’t been able to adapt to the physicality of the English game. Yes, I have seen him make last ditch sliding tackles and blocking shots, but I also see him getting substituted in games where he is needed, just because he gets tired. I know that at this level and the tough fixture lists, players do need rest, but this phenomenon of Oscar getting an early substitution has been noticed by me time and time again.

Also, sometimes I have seen that Oscar finds it difficult to play a whole 90 mins even after getting a day’s rest. This is unacceptable from a player of his stature. Jose Mourinho wanted to build the whole team surrounding Oscar, but unfortunately he hasn’t been able to deliver when the platform has been given to him, while Hazard and Willian and the new acquisitions have taken up the mantle.

I like Oscar as a player and I also know the potential he can reach up to by some glimpses he has shown over the course of the seasons he has played at Chelsea, but unfortunately he hasn’t showcased the same on a consistent basis.

There were some rumors that he would be involved in a swap deal with Juventus with Paul Pobga, and if he continues this dismal run, I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds his way out of Stamford Bridge.
