Chelsea FC: Didier Drogba To Play Next Season

It was hard watching Chelsea FC‘s legendary striker Didier Drogba struggle up and down the pitch against QPR last week. The 37 year old striker looked every bit his age and he looks to be done as a Premier League striker that can play a full 90 minutes. Drogba however feels that he is not done playing football and even at his advanced age he wants to play at least one more season.

Drogba told the Daily Mail that he reached a final decision about his future. He said “I have made a decision, it’s not my last season.” He even acknowledged that he struggled against QPR but blamed it on his lack of playing time and not his advanced age.

Drogba said, “It’s difficult when you don’t play and then have to go into these kind of games but I tried to give my best. I tried to give the best of my physical capacity against QPR so if the manager needs me I’m ready”.

Didier is right it is difficult, but not in the sense that he means. What is truly difficult is seeing your heroes struggle to play the way they did in their prime. He is clearly in the twilight of his career but he has still contributed to this Chelsea team throughout the season. He has scored important goals in big matches against Manchester United and Swingdon Town and has helped to motivate and inspire his young teammates.

However Drogba feels that he can offer much more than just motivation and spirit. He is convinced that he can still play and far be it for me to suggest otherwise. What I can suggest is that he is no longer good enough to play for Chelsea FC.

If he would like to continue playing then perhaps a move across the Atlantic to MLS may suit him. He did not appear to enjoy his time in China with Shanghai Shenhua but perhaps he was just not ready to “retire” at the time. Obviously MLS is more competitive than the Chinese league but it would give him a chance to further capitalize on his fame and continue to fund his many charitable contributions.

If money for those charities is indeed what Drogba is still is after then perhaps a move to the Middle East for one last big payday is on the cards. Wherever he ends up we know that Didier Drogba will give his all to his club just like the way he gave his heart and soul to Chelsea FC..
